Robert J. Abernethy

Robert Abernethy is a real estate developer and the Chair of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Abernethy received a B.A. in mathematics and electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins and a M.B.A. from Harvard Business school. His many accomplishments include assistant to chief scientist for the Phoenix missile program at Hughes Aircraft Co., L.A., as well as serving as the director of the Los Angeles MTA for three years, starting in 1995. He was also on the Board of Directors for the L.A. Theatre Ctr. from 1986-1982.

Currently, he is a member of the advisory board of the Peabody Conservatory as well as a trustee of the Johns Hopkins University. He is also President of American Standard Development Company and Self Storage Management Company. Abernethy is a member of the California Transporation Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Pacific Council on International Policy. Since 1980, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Public Storage Inc. He currently resides in Southern California.
