From Zaire to The Congo

The slow-motion fall Mobutu from power in Zaire finally came to climax in May. With the help of Uganda, Rwanda and Tutsi rebels from Eastern Zaire, Laurent Kabila seized power in the crumbling central African state. Below, the top UN mediator for the region, Mohamad Sahnoun, and one of Africa's most eminent elder statesmen, Julius Nyerere, comment on what the change in Zaire for the whole continent.
