Brussels - Fernand Braudel, the economic historian, once wrote that "les evenements son poussiere," insisting on the shaping importance of the "longue duree." Federico Mayor, the biochemist and former head of UNESCO, has argued the opposite - that the discontinuity of history suggests that events play a central role.
