From Red to Green
Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union heads Green
Cross International, based in Geneva, Switzerland. (The American affiliate
is called Global Green USA.) He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
for his role in ending the Cold War).
If the United States is the sole remaining superpower,
Gorbachev may be the last remaining global leader. He strikes those who
meet him not as a has-been statesman relegated to the pages of history
books, but rather a man with a still-unfulfilled destiny. He now employs
his famous charisma and energy on behalf of global environmental causes.
He was interviewed in Washington by NPQ editor Nathan
Gardels in advance of the summit of world leaders that met at the United
Nations in June to evaluate progress on the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.
